On the Atlantic Coast, Safi is halfway between El Jadida and Essaouira. Beginning in the 16th century, Safi’s port acquired much merchant prosperity. It is now recognized throughout the country for the know-how if its artisans in the fields of pottery and ceramics.
In Safi, the castle of the sea (Ksar el Bahr) is a mandatory stop. After your visit is over, prolong it by climbing up the patrol path (chemin de ronde) to soak in the view over the ocean and the port. A few steps from the castle, stop and grab a tasty treat at the Independence square by the rampart gates. Then, tour the city’s medina by taking the rue du Socco to the gate of Bab Chaaba. At the feet of the Colline des Potiers (potter’s hill), wander off to take a peek at the pottery manufactures and the shopping arcades, bona fide treasure troves! Not far from here, at the Kechla, you can tour Safi’s kasbah that now houses the National Ceramics Museum.
